Fix OST File: A Boon in situations of Exchange Server Crash

Nowadays, most of the organizations depend upon Microsoft Exchange Server for establishing and maintaining a reliable e-mail communication system. In such organizations, MS Outlook works in coordination with Microsoft Exchange Server to help the end users to access the Exchange mailbox. It makes e-mail communication possible in the organization.

How does MS-Exchange & MS-Outlook work together?

Microsoft-Exchange Server saves all the user mailboxes in a database file named Outlook Exchange Database (OST file). And the users can access their mailboxes data on their device by configuring MS Outlook with their Exchange accounts. What are the Outlook OST files?

While using the Cached Exchange Mode, a backup copy of the Exchange mailbox data is created in the form of Offline Storage Table (.ost) file on the user system, which stores emails, contacts, journals,   attachments, notes, images, tasks, to-do-list items, drafts, and other items. With the OST file, the users can easily work offline mode even when they are not connected to Exchange Server.

The OST files also help in some other ways too. It helps in the Exchange recovery of mailbox items after events like Exchange crashes and disasters. If something wrong occurs to the Exchange database file say, the database gets corrupt/ broken, MS-Exchange Server gets crashed, or the hard disk where the database is stored gets corrupted. Hence, the entire email communication gets disturbed until the database is not re-populated.

Damage of the Exchange database files annoys the outlook users, as they cannot communicate anymore. They are unable to access their emails, contacts, to-do-list items, notes, images, emails stored as drafts, and more items. In this scenario, if a complete backup of the Exchange database file is available, then the problem can be resolved without putting much effort.

However, the situation can be difficult if the backup is not available or the backup file has also been corrupted. And once the OST is converted into PST format, the user can access/open a mailbox data with the help of MS Outlook.
